Wie auch der große Bruder "75 Years of DC Comics" bildet auch das Kleinere wunderbar - in diesem Fall Wonder Womans Geschichte - ab. Und endlich kommen auch Modern und Dark Age vor. Man weiss ja nicht ob es bei den großen Bänden noch weitergeht. Gern dürfen noch Green Lantern und Flash und weitere DC-Helden dazukommen. Ich hoffe Taschen macht es mit Marvel genauso! Weiter so.
Der Taschen Verlag hat die Fans der Superhelden aus dem Hause DC in den letzten Jahren reich beschert. Zunächst erschien der fette Prachtband Prachtband “75 Jahre DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking“, anschließend wurde mit “The Golden Age of DC Comicâ€, “The Silver Age of DC Comic†sowie "The Bronze Age of DC Comic" eine fünfbändige DC-Enzyklopädie gestartet, die sich noch ausführlicher mit jenem Comic-Verlag beschäftigt, der durch seine Helden das Comicheft salonfähig machte. Für den kleineren Geldbeutel oder auch als Mitbringsel hat Taschen zum Preis von jeweils 7,99 Euro zusätzlich noch drei kleine broschierte 12 x 17 cm große Bücher herausgebracht, die sich auf jeweils knapp 200 Seiten mit den bekanntesten DC-Helden Batman, Superman und Wonder Woman beschäftigen.Der Psychologe William Moulton Marston erfand nicht nur Wonder Woman sondern auch den Lügendetektor. Daher trägt seine Heldin mit mythologischem Background auch ein Lasso, das alle zwingt die Wahrheit zu sagen. Moulton, der in trauter Lebensgemeinschaft mit Ehefrau und Geliebter sowie deren Kinder lebte, nannte die Amazone zunächst “Suprema, the Wonder Woman“. Als Wonder Woman hatte sie Ende 1941 schließlich ihren ersten Auftritt im Heft “All Star Comics“ # 8. Darin rettete sie den jungen Flieger Steve Trevor, der sie dann weg von ihrer nur von Frauen bevölkerten Paradiesinsel (die später “Themyscira“ genannt werden sollte) mitten in die Wirren des Zweiten Weltkrieges bringen sollte.Ab 1944 kämpft Wonder Woman beim Verlag DC an der Seite von Superman und Batman. Nachdem sie zuvor Gastauftritte in der Zeichentrickserie “Super Friends“ absolvierte, entstanden zwei nicht gesendete TV-Pilotfilme (1967 mit Ellie Wood Walker und 1974 mit Cathy Lee Crosby als blonde Wonder Woman). 1975 startet schließlich eine erfolgreiche TV-Serie mit Lynda Carter als Wonder Woman, die anfangs noch zur Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges spiele, danach jedoch in die damalige Gegenwart verlegt wurde. In Zack Snyders „Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice“ wird Gal Gadod als Wonder Woman dabei sein und 2017 in einem eigenen Kinofilm auftreten..In einem kurzen in deutsch, englisch und französisch abgedruckten Essay versucht Herausgeber Paul Lewitz die Frage “Warum lieben wir Wonder Woman?“ zu beantworten. Das restliche Büchlein zeigt dann chronologisch geordnet Bildbeispiele aus der wechselhaften Geschichte der schlagkräftigen Amanzone. Dabei wird natürlich auf die TV-Serie mit Lynda Carter eingegangen, doch die Comics bilden den Schwerpunkt und das ist gut so!

A general overview of the history of Wonder Woman comics, from its Golden Age origins to the Modern Age (up to 2010). As a starting point for people who want to have a general idea about the evolution of her character it serves its purpose, providing dozens (if not hundreds) of pictures of covers and comic strips, with a few tidbits of information here and there.Unfortunately, the book does suffer from its form, as its size makes reading the comic strips and the information provided a bit of a strain on the eyes. Furthermore, it could have benefited from a short summary to introduce the readers to the different ages and highlight some of the more radical changes from one age to the next. Still, at its current price of $5 on Amazon I can hardly find a reason not to have this little book in your library.
This gem of a book, although small in size, is truly wonderful! It is loaded with unique color illustrations, as well as extremely interesting text. Any Wonder Woman fan would be enormously pleased with this high quality book. It is now one of my favorite books pertaining to Wonder Woman. A+
